Pantone has just announced that Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray & Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating will be the theme colours of 2021.
2020 is the year of pandemic and human across the globe were force to lock themselves up in the house in order not to catch the deadly virus. Grey was widely known to be a symbol of mourning and solitude. So, what makes Patone choose ultimate grey as the colour of the year in 2021?
It was the color of Pebble.
“Gray is great. People think grey is neutral, but I think it’s such a moody, intense, dramatic and sexy colour. It’s very sleek.”
Bryan Batt, American actor, b. 1963
What do you know about grey?
Grey is an achromatic colour, meaning that it is a colour “without colour” because it is composed of black and white. The name originated from AD 700 when the Chinese first combined saltpetre, sulphur, and carbon to create Gunpowder. You can check out more information on this colour Gunpower grey on Canva.
Grey Pebble: The tool that allow the human race to survive for 200,000 years
Pebble is a symbolism of endurance, stability, and permanence. They have been rocking our beach for 3 billion years. Our ancestors have been found working with pebble tools during the Palaeolithic period (roughly 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 B.C.) of human history. Using those pebble stone tools, they work together to hunt down the next animal and ensure that their offsprings survive from one generation to the next. Our ancestors do not have fang or claws. In the animal food chain, we are supposed to be the fodders for lions. Due to this tiny grey pebbles, the human race manages to rise up to the top of the food chain and reign master for thousands of years.
“It isn’t normal to live on milk and cream and cheese and ice cream and eggs and chocolate and wheat flour and alcohol. No! Man is a hunter. Most of the wheat flour should be fed to the animals. Let them go through the arduous labour of converting fodder into meat fat. And then eat the animal. That is the smart thing to do.”
